Northwell Health wants to spend $2.5 billion and 11-years rebuilding Lenox Hill Hospital into a 436-foot tower—the equivalent of 40 floors and more than double the height and mass that are permitted under existing zoning laws.
Northwell will seek a complex rezoning of the entire block from 76th to 77th Streets and Park to
Lexington Avenues. Currently, Lexington Ave has a 170-foot height limit. Lenox Hill's hospital
tower is proposed at 436 feet to the top of the parapet, more than 250% of the current maximum height limit.
We oppose this project because it is unnecessary and harmful. There is no medical need for this facility when outer boroughs lack hospitals and the environmental, public health and
infrastructure impacts of this project would devastate our historic neighborhood.
Rather than spending billions on a massive, flashy development in a part of Manhattan that already boasts 6 excellent hospitals, Northwell should improve the existing Lenox Hill facility and service while saving its big investment dollars for boroughs that need better access to care.
